FedExForum is a multi-purpose arena located in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. It is the home of the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the NCAA Division I men’s basketball program of the University of Memphis. FedExForum has a seating capacity of 17,794 for basketball games and 16,411 for ice hockey games. For concerts, the arena can seat up to 19,000 people.

FedExForum officially opened in September 2004 after much debate and also a derecho windstorm on July 22nd, 2003, that nearly brought down the cranes that were building it. The stadium was built at a cost of US$250 million and is owned by the City of Memphis; naming rights were purchased by one of Memphis’s best-known businesses, FedEx, for $92 million.

Designed by architectural firm Ellerbe Becket, the arena is 805,850 ft² (75,000 m²) in size, covering 14 acres (57,000 m²). The playing floor is lower than ground level and the stadium is capable of seating 17,794 for basketball and has 1,000 premiere courtside seats.

Staying in Memphis

Beyond the Airbnb and Sonder options there are many hotels near the stadium to suit all budgets, and several neighbourhoods to stay in, depending on your preferences.

Downtown is the best place to stay for your first time in Memphis. It is creative, atmospheric, and historically layered, and at its very core lies America’s most iconic road, Beale Street. Midtown is the best place to stay for sightseeing and is also budget friendly. East Memphis is a good option for families and those on a budget. Graceland is obviously the best area to stay for Elvis Presley fans. Cooper-Young is a good area for backpackers.
