The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams, an increase of 16 from the previous Qatar tournament. This means that there will be a total of 104 games. The teams that reach the semi-final stage will play eight games during the tournament, as there will be a Round of 32 after the Group stage.
The teams will be divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams will advance to the new round of 32, which will start the knockout phase.
The matches will be held in 16 cities across the three host countries. The opening game will be in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the first stadium to host three World Cup opening games. The final will be held 38 days later in the New York, New Jersey Stadium, commonly known as the MetLife Stadium.
As most Stadiums in North America have naming rights, they have been given different names for the duration of the tournament.
